Ada Maria Soto is a multi-talented poet, writer, and film-maker. Her short story ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ appeared in Pulp Literature Issue 10, Spring 2016. Her poems have been shortlisted twice for the Magpie Award for Poetry. About ‘Northland’, her second Magpie-shortlisted poem, she says, “When you travel north of Auckland things become slower, greener, and quiet.”

As we enter our summer here in the Northern hemisphere, enjoy this bit of not-so-quiet nature from a late summer in New Zealand.

Northland

Ada Maria Soto

Whakaangi

February cicadas in full, desperate, mating frenzy
Drown out even the western winds
Screaming over Doubtless Bay.

The birds have given up trying to sing.
Even the tui,
Who jealously guards his territory
Between the gum tree and the overgrown hibiscus.
