Our Daily Be-Read
What’s on your To Be Read list? For some, the pile groans with weighty classics or biographical tomes. For others, it sags under the weight of three-years’ worth of best-sellers or political goings-on. Or perhaps your literary be-read basket is loaded with nutritional how-to’s and foodie inspirationals.
And these days, there is certainly no shortage of dietary dissertation. Badges of food-honour abound: Vegan! Paleo! Gluten-free!
Fruitarian? Vegetarian? Pescatarian? Ketotarian? Meatatarian? Whatever one’s multisyllabic dietary handle, one thing is certain: we could all use a daily dose of literary nutrition. So, for the litertarians among us, I remind you of that most essential of sustenance staples: a good story, well told.
The easiest way to meet your recommended intake is through short fiction. (You know where this is headed now, don’t you?) What better way to get your daily dose than from the pages of Pulp Literature? Every issue is jam-packed with savoury stories, piquant poetry, gourmet graphic shorts, and mouth-watering excerpts. A well-rounded and bounteous buffet, indeed!
So pull up a chair and join us this week on Friday Live for another scrumptious sampling from our literatrian’s tasting menu.
Friday’s live line-up
Every Friday, from 10:00-10:30am pacific, we are livestreaming readings featuring three authors who will read their work and answer questions from the audience. This week on Friday Live, we bring you Hannah van Didden, Theric Jepson, and Michael Kamakana.
Hannah van Didden
Hannah writes where the story takes her — usually somewhere dark but truthful; often beautiful. You will find pieces of her in places such as Tahoma Literary Review, Crannóg, Southerly Literary Journal, Breach, Atticus Review, and Southword Journal. She was shortlisted for the 2020 Bumblebee Contest with ‘The Slippery Man’ and her short story ‘The Lion’ is forthcoming in Pulp Literature Issue 27. Connect with Hannah via @hannahvandidden or read more of her work on 37thirtyseven.com.
Theric Jepson
Since his short story ‘The Naked Woman’ appeared in Pulp Literature Issue 6, Theric Jepson (@thmazing) has left ghosts behind to write short fiction about dragons, steampunk religion, eldritch horrors of the American South, and an angry three-year-old—all the great mysteries of the age. Look for his novel Just Julie’s Fine (BCC Press) in the next year or so.
Michael Kamakana
Michael Kamakana is a Calgary-based novelist with a talent for storytelling that holds readers rapt. He is a prolific writer who works almost non-stop to get his work out of his head and into print. His acclaimed novel Advent was published by Pulp Literature in 2019, an excerpt of which appears in Issue 19.
