Reilly Fitzgerald has been creating art since he was a teenager in the 1980s and developed his often colourful, bold, expressionistic style while painting the picturesque scenery of his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Reilly has had many challenges in his life, including being born with a malformed dominant right hand and arm, and developing debilitating chronic back pain and osteoarthritis as an adult. Following his formal education in art and art history, he illustrated children’s books, provided art for educational posters, and developed logos and paintings for book covers and puzzles.

Buttercups and Beach Rocks was inspired by a scene in Hibbs Cove, Newfoundland. Children at play is a subject that Fitzgerald returns to as he tries to capture the innocence, ingenuity, and imagination of childhood activities, from flying homemade newspaper kites in summer skies, to jumping into fresh fallen snow off the mountains of cleared snow built up over winter, copying ice pans blown toward shore in the spring, or walking on stilts made from scraps of lumber on autumn days. He is sure that these simple activities disguise a complexity only apparent in children’s imagined world of play.
