This Week on Friday Live: Richard O’Brien, Kerry Craven, and Mitchell Toews

Fixed in Place

Whatever the conditions of life, we bibliophiles turn to the written word for its capacity to enchant and thrill, to delight and inspire. Literature reassures us of the infinite possibilities for beauty, serenity, joy — and for healing.

From where we sit, fixed in place, great stories allow us to revisit the lessons of the past, or to see more clearly the lessons of the present. They invite us, encourage us even, to escape the here and now, or to enter it entirely, our hearts and minds comforted by the assurance that this too shall pass.

In each issue of Pulp Literature, we aim to bring you a variety of genres, styles, and voices. Within our pages you will discover something new, or revisit the familiar, or perhaps simply disappear for a while, held in the magical realm of literary suspension.

We are so grateful to each of our authors, whose stories and poetry never fail to enchant or thrill. Slip their words like a treasure map into the pocket of your coziest jammies, and make your escape.

Friday’s live line-up

Every Friday, from 10:00-10:30am pacific, we are livestreaming readings, featuring three authors who will read their work and answer questions from the audience. This week on Friday Live, we bring you Richard O’Brien, Kerry Craven, and Mitchell Toews.

Richard O’Brien

Richard lives in New Jersey where he teaches writing and literature at Rowan College at Gloucester County and Stockton University. His novels include The Garden of Fragile Things, Infestation, and Under the Bronze Moon. His short story ‘The Slade Transmutation’ appeared in Issue 19 of Pulp Literature. Visit Richard at obrienwriter.com and follow him @obrienwriter on Twitter.

Kerry Craven

Kerry Craven is an English and creative writing teacher in Oshawa, Ontario. Her short story ‘Meggie’ appeared in Issue 18. It was written on a retreat in Scotland with Inkslingers, a local writing group, and was inspired by the brave people in her life who struggle to care for those with dementia, mental health issues, and addiction problems. As a child, her grandmother Alma Craven had a magic bag that always seemed to have something wonderful in it for her, and she looks back fondly on the days when magic still existed in her world.

Mitchell Toews

Mitchell Toews lives and writes at Jessica Lake in Manitoba. Winner of the Editors’ Choice for our 2020 Bumblebee Flash Fiction contest, his short story ‘Piece of my Heart’ is forthcoming in Issue 27. As well, ‘Away Game’ appeared in Issue 20. Mitch’s writing has appeared in riverbabble, CommuterLit, Fiction on the Web, Literally Stories, Red Fez, SickLit, Voices Journal, The Machinery, Storgy, LingoBites, Work magazine, Occulum, Rhubarb Magazine, and Fictive Dream.
