It could be said that, as a global community, the sense of we’re all in this together has never been stronger. Although we must close our doors and keep our distance, these actions are a gift to those whose lives depend on them. And many of us are forging new connections or maintaining old ones through the wonders of this, our digital age.
In the literary community, readers are rallying to support their local booksellers and small presses. Authors are offering their work on social media with inspirational short pieces and live readings. In these uncertain times, one thing is certain: books matter.
Every Friday, from 10:00-10:30am pacific, we are livestreaming readings, featuring three authors who will read their work and answer questions from the audience.
Friday’s live line-up
This week on Friday Live, we bring you Bob Thurber, Carol Berg, and Jude Neale.
Bob Thurber
Bob Thurber (Issues 3, 6, 12) grew up ‘dirt poor’ but taught himself how to write short fiction. He’s now a major voice in microfiction, with a long list of nominations and awards, and his widely published work has been selected for some fifty anthologies. ‘If You’d Like to Make A Call, Please Hang Up’ won the 2007 Barry Hannah Fiction Prize and was previously published in The Yalobusha Review. You can read more at bobthurber.com.
Carol Berg
Former software engineer Carol Berg (Issue 10) never believed she could write one novel, never mind fifteen epic fantasies, never mind win the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature. We at Pulp aren’t the least bit surprised at her collection of awards, and were thrilled to publish her detective story ‘Uncanonical Murder’, which takes place three years prior to the events of her Collegia Magica novels. Her newest novel, Ash and Silver, is the finale of the Sanctuary duology. You can find more of Carol’s works at www.carolberg.com.
Jude Neale
Jude Neale’s poetry (Issue 13) has been shortlisted for numerous international poetry prizes, including our own Magpie Awards. Her book Splendid in its Silence was shortlisted for publication in the UK, and she just launched her eighth book of poetry, Impromptu. She’ll be on a mini tour between now and June, when she begins her Poetry Residency at Joy Kogawa House. Read more at judeneale.ca.
