Fine Flash
We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2026 Hummingbird Flash Fiction Prize! Selected by final judge, Finnian Burnett, you can find the winner and honourable mention below along with judge’s commentary!
Winner: ‘The Mysteries’ by Jaime Gill
“This story engrossed me from the beginning. The specific details, the emotional escalation, the sense of injustice and growing frustration. The story delivers a gut punch near the end and compounds that sadness in the events that follow the climax, but ultimately, comes back to celebrating life with joy and love. It was that journey that made this a winner for me.”
Honourable Mention: ‘The Right Hand Girl’ by Alex Reece Abbott
“The author of this piece created a rhythmic poetry in the story that built to the heartbreaking ending. I love the use of second person future tense – a POV so difficult to pull off, but when done well, as in this story, it’s memorable and engaging.”
This year, we are also pleased to announce the following story as the Editors’ Choice!
Editors’ Choice: ‘Vanished Species’ by Amber Allen
Final judge Finnian Burnett also labelled this story as a notable entry with “lovely emotional impact.”
