Congratulations to the Winners of the 2025 Hummingbird Prize!

Winners Flying In!

It is now time to announce the winners of the 2025 Hummingbird Flash Fiction Prize! Please find the winner and honourable mention below along with commentary by final judge, the brilliant Finnian Burnett.

Winner: ‘October nineteenth’ by Kirsty Campbell

“This gorgeous story was strong on voice. I was invested in the main character by the end of the second line. And the story built in a natural way, the main character felt genuine and the way the author interspersed the text messages from friends and family felt real and engaging. The twist of the story surprised me … when the twist came, I thought the author was going one direction and it went another. I love a story that surprises me, makes me sad, and makes me think. This story did all of the above.”

Honourable Mention: ‘Change of Life’ by JA Logwood

“This is a delightful story with a relatable narrator and a great dose of humour. I was engaged with the story and when the twist came, I was already invested in the main character. The author’s use of humour and the tongue in cheek nod to menopause was absolutely spot on. We need more stories like this in our lives.”
