Announcing the Winners of the 2021 Hummingbird Flash Fiction Prize!

The Bird’s Got the Word

It’s always a treat to read the wide-ranging and wonderful stories that alight on our desks during Hummingbird season. Once again, master of flash fiction Bob Thurber joined us in the judge’s seat. And once again, we delighted in making his judging job oh-so difficult!

About the ten finalists, Bob tells us: A meritorious batch of stories, each of them with obvious merit, all requiring careful study. … Congratulations to all the writers, and thank you for some enjoyable reads.

First Place: ‘The Art of Ironing’ by Natalie Harris-Spencer
Runner-up: ‘Out in the Sticks’ by Kevin Sandefur
Notable Mentions: ‘Clothesline’ by Kimberley Aslett and ‘The Realm of Shadows’ by Megan W Shaw

‘The Art of Ironing’, which Bob described as ‘A neat portrait packed full of colourful descriptions and vivid imagery‘, will appear in Pulp Literature Issue 33, Winter 2022. And the runner-up and notable mentions will also appear in future issues of Pulp.

Check out our Summer 2021 launch to meet the authors and hear them read their winning entries!

Congratulations to those who made the shortlist: Alex Reece Abbott, Hannah van Didden, Kevin Sandefur, Kimberley Aslett, Maria Marchese, Megan W Shaw, Natalie Harris-Spencer (with two stories), PG Streeter, and Shanda Connolly.

Thank you to all submitting authors for sharing your words and supporting Pulp Literature!
