Two Birds
We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2023 Hummingbird Flash Fiction Prize, as selected by final judge Bob Thurber.
And, with a nest full of such high-flying Hummingbirds, the editorial team just couldn’t resist picking an Editors’ Choice winner.
Here now, the top two! And because we love a great opening line, we’ve decided to tempt your literary tastebuds with the first sentence of each. Look for the stories, in their entirety, coming up in Issue 41, Winter 2024.
Winner: ‘Field’s Nocturne No. 10 in E Major’ by Matt Lumbard
Sonny wakes to the smell of coffee and the sight of his Grampa slipping suspenders over his shoulders, looking at the woodstove and muttering: “It’ll burn itself out.”
Editors’ Choice: ‘Separate Worlds’ by Chip Houser
The first time the earth tolls, we’re all in our separate worlds doing what we do.
New for the New Year
‘Field’s Nocturne No. 10 in E Major’ and ‘Separate Worlds’ will help us kick off the first issue of our next decade, appearing in Issue 41, Winter 2024.
Our thanks once again to Bob Thurber, and to all submitting authors for sharing your words and supporting Pulp Literature!
