Pulp and the Pushcart
For many of us, putting 2020 in the rear-view mirror will bring a hearty sigh of relief. But in the small press biz, plugging 2021 into the literary GPS means a chance to revisit the roads we’re not quite ready to leave behind.
We are honoured to have had so many incredible pieces to choose from to put forward for the 2021 Pushcart Prize. And we are delighted to share with you our nominees (two poems and four short stories).
At Pulp Literature, our literary landscape dips and dives across diverse genres. And so, to give you a glimpse of the scenery on offer, we include below the opening line to each nominated piece.
And the nominees are …
‘Wrap Party’ by A.M. Dellamonica, Issue 25
~ “There’s blood in my puddle!”
‘A Parable of Things that Crawl and Fly’ by Graham Robert Scott and Wallace Cleaves, Issue 25
~ Every hour, every minute, I hear the throaty, chuckling call of a raven.
‘A Tree Slowly Rots’ by David Troupes, Issue 25
~ Autumn in the sculleries — / dusk tubs and heat pipes, …
‘The Absence’ by Erin Kirsh, Issue 27
~ When we look into the open casket, there is nothing …
‘Man with Golden Helmet’ by Renée Sarojini Saklikar, Issue 28

‘Little Snowflake Girls’ by Dawn Lo, Issue 28
~ Every weekday, after I make dinner, I wait at the parlour window for Big Sister to come home from work.
Thank you to all of our authors, poets, and artists for sharing your words and making 2020 that much brighter. And congratulations and best of luck to Alyx, Graham, Wallace, David, Erin, Renée, and Dawn!
